    It is shown that every Boolean function of n arguments has a circuit of depth n+1 over the basis {f|f:{0,1}^2 -> {0,1}}

    Age and Gender in Reddit Commenting and Success

    Get PDF
    Reddit is a large user generated content (USG) website in which users form common interest groups and submit links to external content or text posts of user-created content. The web site operates on a voting system whereby registered users can assign positive or negative ratings to both submitted content and comments made to submitted content. While Reddit is a pseudonymous site, with users creating usernames but providing no biographical data, an informal survey posted to a large shared interest community yielded 734 responses including age and gender of users. This provided a large amount of contextual biographical data with which to analyse user profiles at the first level of Computer Mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA), articulated by Susan Herring. The results indicate that older Reddit users both formulate more complex writing and enjoy more success when rated by other users. Gender data was incomplete and as such only tentative results could be proposed in that regard

    Streaming Availability and Library Circulation: An Exploratory Study.

    Get PDF
    The contents of a popular film and television video collection at a mid-sized university totaling 2,242 items were examined for availability and total number of checkouts on three major streaming services: Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. A total of 1026 titles were coded for availability on Netflix and Hulu. Then, 454 items were coded for availability on Amazon Instant. It was found that total circulation counts changed depending on the streaming services used. Specifically only Hulu was found to correlate negatively. Library titles available on Netflix Streaming had more charges on average then titles not available on Netflix streaming. Titles available on Amazon Instant were twice as likely to circulate then items not available on Amazon Instant. This leads to the possibility that Amazon Instant might be used as collection development tool in order to gauge how often certain DVD title could circulate. In addition it can be concluded that availability over subscription streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Instant, actually points to items that may circulate more frequently

    Dense-array teleseismic imaging of the southern Albuquerque basin

    The southern Albuquerque basin is a complex area of high extension, multiple orogenies, and ongoing uplift from a midcrustal magma body in which geophysical coverage is sparse. In this thesis, I capitalize on recent innovations in dense-array processing techniques to create virtual source reflection profiles from five teleseismic events during the deployment of the Sevilleta array. The Sevilleta array consisted of ~800 vertical component nodes with ~300 m spacing deployed for 10 days in February of 2015. Virtual source reflection profiles are created by using the free surface of the earth as a virtual seismic source, yielding profiles that mimic active source seismic surveys. From the seventeen virtual source reflection profiles created, I am able to resolve mapped and buried geologic structures throughout much of the southern Albuquerque and northern Socorro basins. Furthermore, I present a unique case of teleseismic P-wave to Rayleigh wave conversion, which is a dominating feature along the western margin of the two basins. The dense instrument spacing makes it possible to detect these arrivals, which likely occur due to the strong impedance contrast between the rift basin sediments and bounding basement-cored fault blocks

    Multiple classifier architectures and their application to credit risk assessment

    Get PDF
    Multiple classifier systems combine several individual classifiers to deliver a final classification decision. An increasingly controversial question is whether such systems can outperform the single best classifier and if so, what form of multiple classifier system yields the greatest benefit. In this paper the performance of several multiple classifier systems are evaluated in terms of their ability to correctly classify consumers as good or bad credit risks. Empirical results suggest that many, but not all, multiple classifier systems deliver significantly better performance than the single best classifier. Overall, bagging and boosting outperform other multi-classifier systems, and a new boosting algorithm, Error Trimmed Boosting, outperforms bagging and AdaBoost by a significant margin

    Accessing Patient Records in Virtual Healthcare Organisations

    No full text
    The ARTEMIS project is developing a semantic web service based P2P interoperability infrastructure for healthcare information systems that will allow healthcare providers to securely share patient records within virtual healthcare organisations. Authorisation decisions to access patient records across organisation boundaries can be very dynamic and must occur within a strict legislative framework. In ARTEMIS we are developing a dynamic authorisation mechanism called PBAC that provides a means of contextual and process oriented access control to enforce healthcare business processes. PBAC demonstrates how healthcare providers can dynamically share patient records for care pathways across organisation boundaries

    Structural and dielectric studies of the phase behaviour of the topological ferroelectric La1-xNdxTaO4

    We thank the University of St Andrews and EPSRC (via DTG studentships to CALD and JG) for funding,The layered perovskite LaTaO4 has been prepared in its polar orthorhombic polymorphic form at ambient temperature. Although no structural phase transition is observed in the temperature interval 25° C < T < 500 °C, a very large axial thermal contraction effect is seen, which can be ascribed to an anomalous buckling of the perovskite octahedral layer. The non-polar monoclinic polymorph can be stabilised at ambient temperature by Nd-doping. A composition La0.90Nd0.10TaO4 shows a first-order monoclinic-orthorhombic (non-polar to polar) transition in the region 250° C < T < 350 °C. Dielectric responses are observed at both the above structural events but, despite the ‘topological ferroelectric’ nature of orthorhombic LaTaO4, we have not succeeded in obtaining ferroelectric P–E hysteresis behaviour. Structural relationships in the wider family of AnBnX3n+2 layered perovskites are discussed.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Total Cross Sections for Neutron Scattering

    Get PDF
    Measurements of neutron total cross-sections are both extensive and extremely accurate. Although they place a strong constraint on theoretically constructed models, there are relatively few comparisons of predictions with experiment. The total cross-sections for neutron scattering from 16^{16}O and 40^{40}Ca are calculated as a function of energy from 50−70050-700~MeV laboratory energy with a microscopic first order optical potential derived within the framework of the Watson expansion. Although these results are already in qualitative agreement with the data, the inclusion of medium corrections to the propagator is essential to correctly predict the energy dependence given by the experiment.Comment: 10 pages (Revtex 3.0), 6 fig
